Get with the Times, New Roman!

You know the typeface: cramped, thick, blocky. Impact is second only to Comic Sans in the ranking of hideous fonts. A recent visualization by Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth (via FlowingData) offers another reason to avoid Impact; it hogs ink. Sorry to see Helvetica ranking just above Comic Sans, but I have long been a lover of Garamond, especially for mapping. So if you’re interested in saving a little ink, print your papers in Garamond from now on. For a little more font fun, check out this video, pointed out to ┬áme by my dad a few years ago.
